Oscar-nominated “Boyhood” director Richard Linklater is set to adapt Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along” into a film for Blumhouse Productions.
Initially based on George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1934 play, the musical follows a talented Broadway composer who abandons his theater career in New York and all his friends in order to produce movies in Los Angeles.
The musical begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing snapshots of the most important moments in Frank’s life that shaped the man he is today. As a result, the film is reportedly being shot in reverse chronological order.
Ben Platt (“Pitch Perfect,” “The Politician”) will play the lead while Beanie Feldstein (“Booksmart,” “How to Build a Girl”) plays his best friend and theater critic Mary Flynn.
