With the passing of Paul Walker, and the fact the franchise hasn’t really seen much in the way of new blood coming on, could Universal’s “Fast and Furious” franchise be planning to finish up?
Deadline reports that there’s talk that director Justin Lin and Universal could re-team on the franchise. Lin came in on the third film in the series and turned opinion around on the franchise. The fifth film in particular proved to be a mainstream smash hit with strong critical notices. The sixth film also did strong business, and was Lin’s last with the series.
James Wan took over for the upcoming “Furious 7,” but with Wan’s signing on for “The Conjuring” sequel and with the proposed Lin-directed follow-up to “The Bourne Legacy” now on the backburner, could Lin be coming back to the films that made him famous?
The site says they expect Lin and Universal to begin talking again about him directing a “multi-part production that will lead to multiple movies shot together and will wave the checkered flag on the Fast & Furious franchise”.
The studio has no comment at this time claims the site. There’s certainly plenty of life left in the series, the recent teaser trailer launch for the series racked up 100 million viewers in 48 hours across various social media and video streaming channels.
Lin is next committed to directing two episodes of the upcoming second season of HBO’s “True Detective”.
