“Like Water for Chocolate” Gets A TV Remake

Endemol Shine Studios has acquired the rights to Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel’s best-selling 1989 novel “Like Water for Chocolate” with plans to develop the property as not just an English language series but a global television franchise with versions in other languages as well.

The novel follows the story of a young girl named Tita who longs her entire life to marry her lover, Pedro, but can never have him because of her mother’s upholding of the family tradition of the youngest daughter not marrying but taking care of her mother until the day she dies.

Tita is only able to express herself when she cooks. The story adds magical realism and positive supernatural elements combined with the more ordinary mundaneness of real life.

A Spanish-language film adaptation in 1992, penned by Esquivel herself, went on to become the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever released in the United States and scored an Oscar nomination.
