Chris McKay, the director of 2017’s “The LEGO Batman Movie,” has revealed that Warner Animation Group has given the go-ahead for a sequel. In fact McKay tweeted today: “We are working on that right now actually! In the meantime, LEGO Batman is all over LEGO 2 coming in February.”
No announcement of a sequel ever came through official channels until these comments. Will Arnett provides the voice for LEGO Batman which he’ll reprise for “The LEGO Movie” sequel opening early next year.
The comments come as a new profile piece on Amber Heard in THR reports that early box-office tracking figures for “Aquaman” have been so good that they’ve given Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich: “enough confidence to begin talks on a sequel”.
No writer has yet been commissioned, but it appears internal talk of a follow-up has already begun. The film is on course for an opening weekend of around $65 million domestic, and a lot will depend upon the film’s subsequent business over the December/January frame when families flock to cinemas as Christmas and in the New Year.
