Legendary Entertainment has won an intense bidding war for “Hustle,” a spec script from Taylor Materne (Netflix’s “Marseilles”) which has LeBron James’ Springhill Entertainment and Roth/Kirschenbaum Films attached as producers.
The story follows a washed-up basketball scout who discovers a Chinese streetball phenomenon and sees him as his ticket back to the NBA.
He talks the young man into coming to Los Angeles to train for the draft and is thrown into the hype machine of pro basketball prospects and must deal with being away from his family and village for the first time.
Dave Meyers, best known for his work with hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar, will helm the project which James, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Zack Roth and Maverick Carter will produce. This follows on from news earlier this week which was that James has been set as a producer of a remake of cult 1990 film “House Party”.
