Legendary Pictures and Sunrise are reportedly set to co-produce a live-action adaptation of the mecha anime franchise “Gundam”. The announcement came at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Launched in 1979 with acclaimed anime TV series “Mobile Suit Gundam,” the series followed the war between the Earth Federation and the space colonies of the Principality of Zeon.
In one of these colonies, the Earth Federation is storing and testing a new piloted robot for use. The experimental RX-78 Gundam mobile suit is forced into combat with a civilian pilot and an untested crew trying to transport it to the Federation’s HQ on Earth.
The series helped popularise the giant robot genre which led to the likes of the iconic “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and films such as “Pacific Rim”. Legendary’s Cale Boyter will oversee the project.
