Legend of the Guardians Splashy Debut

The first photos from Zack Snyder’s CG-animated fantasy feature “Legend of the Guardians”, based on the first three books in Kathryn Lasky’s “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” novel series, went online in a splashy article in USA Today earlier today along with a gallery containing several photos.

The story follows Soren (Jim Sturgess), a young barn owl who is kidnapped by the owls of the St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls. The academy is supposed to be an orphanage, but instead it brainwashes its pupils into becoming soldiers who will ultimately clash with the wise, peaceful owls of Ga’Hoole.

Unlike his previous works, Snyder has shown a lot of restraint with his efforts here – “There are a lot of intense themes in the books, scenes that might not seem so intense on the written page but would be too much on screen. We wanted to pull back a little. [Something] not as hardcore. We wanted a beautiful, computer-generated, 3-D world the kids had never seen before.”

The article also gives a breakdown of the characters. Deborra-Lee Furness plays Barran, the queen of the great tree and a source of knowledge for the noble owls. Hugo Weaving is Noctus, Soren’s father. Helen Mirren is Nyra, the evil Queen of St. Aegolius Academy. Emilie de Ravin is Soren’s friend Eglantine while Ryan Kwanten is Soren’s jealous brother Kludd. Finally Richard Roxburgh is Boron, the kindly King of Ga’Hoole who is fond of scat humor.
