“Precious” and “The Butler” helmer Lee Daniels has dropped out of the long in the works biopic about comedian Richard Pryor at The Weinstein Company.
Daniels cited a busy schedule as being to blame with the studio declining to wait further for him to make the time for it. They are currently searching for another helmer and reportedly made initial overtures to several filmmakers this weekend.
Mike Epps, Kate Hudson and Oprah Winfrey presently remain attached to star to the project which is entitled “Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?” and boasts a script by Bill Condon. The film follows the groundbreaking comedian who rose to prominence in the 1970s before enjoying a film and television career and succumbing to multiple sclerosis.
Shooting was slated to begin in March, the new start date is October and the studio is sticking by that. It’s unclear if any cast members will exit with Daniels or if a new filmmaker will want script revisions.
