“If Beale Street Could Talk” star Kiki Layne is set while singer Teyana Taylor, rapper Rick Ross, comedian Michael Blackson and SNL alum Leslie Jones are in negotiations to join “Coming 2 America” at Paramount Pictures. The new additions announced hours after that of the reveal of Wesley Snipes joining the follow-up to the 1988 comedy classic.
Eddie Murphy starred in the original as Prince Akeem, a spoiled prince from the fictional African nation of Zamunda who arrives in Queens, New York in search of a wife. The new story sees Akeem, now set to become king, discovering he has a son he never knew about – a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler).
Akeem honors his dying father King Jaffe Joffer’s wish to groom the newly found son as a crowned prince, and so Akeem must once again return to America. Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Louie Anderson and Paul Bates are confirmed to be reprising their respective roles of loyal aide Semmi, King Jaffe, McDowell’s employee Maurice and bodyguard Oha from the first film.
Layne will play Akeem’s daughter, burdened with feeling like she is the son her father never had. Leslie Jones will play Lavelle’s mother. Craig Brewer helms the project which is slated for a December 18th 2020 release.
