“Orange is the New Black” star Laverne Cox is set to play Dr. Frank N. Furter on the upcoming “Rocky Horror Picture Show” musical TV movie remake in the works at FOX.
Featuring music, lyrics and book by Richard O’Brien, the original show premiered in 1973 and the film in 1975 with the movie following a just-engaged couple (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) whose car breaks down outside a mysterious castle. The pair soon finding themselves overnight guests of the mad Doctor (Tim Curry), a self-descibed “sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania”.
The film developed a cult following and now holds the record for the single longest theatrical run of all time, having consistently played in theaters for 30 years thanks largely to midnight screenings.
Kenny Ortega (“High School Musical”) will direct, choreograph and executive produce the new telemovie which Gail Berman is producing.
