“Hannibal” and “The Matrix” actor Laurence Fishburne is set to star in the remake of the classic 1977 miniseries “Roots” for A+E Networks.
Fishburne will play Alex Haley, the author of the novel “Roots” and a role which James Earl Jones portrayed in the 1977 original.
“Roots” is an American family origin story based around the life and descendants of Kunta Kinte, an 18th-century African captured as an adolescent and sold into slavery in the United States. The new version will incorporate material from Haley’s novel along with carefully researched new scholarship of the time.
Will Packer (“Ride Along”) is set to executive produce alongside Mark Wolper and LeVar Burton. The event series is set to be simulcast on History, A&E and Lifetime.
