Latest Apple TV Model Unveiled

Apple has unveiled the next model of its streaming media player Apple TV.

The fourth model in the series, and the first update to the range since 2012, is essentially the same design but slightly taller than the previous model although containing the exact same ports.

The device’s remote has been redesigned though with several more buttons and a glass touch sensitive pad for swiping and pressing motions. The new remote also includes voice command capabilities with Siri built in.

The new model, which comes in 32Gb ($149) and 64Gb ($199) models, allows searching across iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime. Siri can sort movies by actor or actress, provide recommendations for good movies to watch with kids, and offer sport scores and weather.

The killer feature though is an App Store which will turn the device into a far more flexible box and finally offers some serious competition with its main rival and current category market leader Roku. One third-party app demonstrated showed a new MLB app with 1080p/60fps video streaming and synced live stats.

There’s also a new interface which you can get an idea of below in the device’s promotional video. The new Apple TV is due out in late October.
