Walt Disney Animation’s “Moana” won the domestic box office for the third straight weekend with another $18.8 million being added to its now $145 million domestic total. The film had serious competition from Paramount’s R-rated comedy “Office Christmas Party” which came a close second with an estimated $17.5 million.
It was the limited release front though where all the action was this weekend with “La La Land” opening to a stunning $855,000 from just five cinemas – a per screen average of $171,000 which is the year’s best and the second best ever recorded behind only “The Grand Budapest Hotel” with $202,000. “La La Land” will expand to 200 locations and 40 markets this coming weekend ahead of its wide release at Christmas.
In other box-office news, “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” came in third with $10.8 million its fourth weekend for a total of $199.3 million domestic and a further $480.7 million overseas. “Arrival” was fourth with $5.6 million in fourth place and a total of $81.5 million after five weeks.
