Following Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” in 2014 and Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ “Kong: Skull Island” this year, the next feature in Legendary’s interconnected MonsterVerse initiative is Michael Dougherty’s “Godzilla” sequel in 2019.
With “Kong: Skull Island” coming to Blu-ray this month, the film’s Twitter account has been posting some tie-in material with one of the new pieces a video that offers a timeline of monster discoveries made by the Monarch Corporation.
The timeline reveals that Monarch discovered a new superspecies with three heads under the Antarctic Ice in 2016 – a creature fans know as King Ghidorah. The timeline indicates a character named Dr. Vivienne Graham led the effort to build a covert containment and research facility around the dormant creature.
The timeline also confirms the discovery of Mothra in 2009, and teases a return expedition by Monarch to Skull Island in 1995. It has already been revealed that both aforementioned creatures and Rodan will all appear in Dougherty’s “Godzilla” follow-up.
Both films so far in the MonsterVerse have done very solid box-office of just over $520 million each, and are sitting on quite good reviews from critics.
Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, Zhang Ziyi and Bradley Whitford will star in the “Godzilla” sequel which is currently filming and opens March 22nd 2019.
