With “Logan” set to hit cinemas this coming Friday, the film’s producer Simon Kinberg has been doing press rounds and has offered a bunch of updates on his various projects which include future “X-Men” films and spin-offs, Marvel properties and more. Breaking it down:
Kinberg says the stories of him directing are premature, but they are in prep and can’t confirm what the next film would be title or story wise. Almost immediately after, he gave this long answer:
“We can’t confirm what the next movie will be, but I can talk a little about, frankly, what I would do differently if I were to make X-Men: The Last Stand again, which had the Dark Phoenix storyline.
I think the big mistake we made with that movie – and if anybody is to blame for it it’s the writer, and I was one of them – it’s that we made the Dark Phoenix the subplot of that film, instead of making it the main plot.
The Dark Phoenix story is the biggest, and in many ways the most epic, saga of the X-Men comics, so you can’t make that the B-plot of the movie. If we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to re-tell that story – and certainly, what we did with the end of Days of Future Past gave us the opportunity to re-tell it – I think we all would want to give it the justice and the space to breath that it deserves.”
In a separate interview, Nicholas Hoult tells HeyUGuys: “I think I’m involved. I’d be happy to go back – I love playing that character and I love everyone involved and I know there’s one in the works.”
Confirming the mid-year start of production talk, Kinberg tells Collider that director Josh Boone is doing a script polish and they’re waiting on a new draft. Prep is underway and the plan is to make that movie late spring, early summer of this year, and have it come out next year.
Kinberg tells Comicbook.com that the X-Men spin-off is in active development and aims to be ready to go by the end of this year ahead of filming early next year. He adds that:
“Channing [Tatum] is as determined about getting the character right as Ryan Reynolds was about Deadpool and Hugh [Jackman] was about this Logan movie. We know that when we get those right, the movie succeeds so we want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise.”
With the sequel to last year’s smash hit, Kinberg says those involved have been working hard on the script and the result is “really good”. The casting process is underway right now for some of the new characters of which there are only a few, but they are ‘big’. The aim is to shoot that throughout the third quarter of this year, starting in June, and have it come out next year.
X-Men: Alpha Flight & Exiles
Kinberg also revealed where the franchise might go in a few years from now. He says:
“We have a sense of where each of all of the existing characters go from Deadpool to New Mutants to the mainland X-Men movies to potentially even X-23. Then, there’s other characters, like X-Flight, like Exiles… There’s a lot of characters to mine going forward. We’re still sort of in this phase where now we’ve completed the Wolverine story with Logan and we begin hopefully with New Mutants and eventually Gambit and continue with Deadpool.”
20th Century Fox right now has March 2nd, June 29th and November 2nd of next year staked out for unknown films at this point – it sounds like “Deadpool 2,” “New Mutants” and “X-Men” will take those slots but it’s not clear in which order.
