Kiki Layne Leads Barry Jenkins’ “Beale Street”

Actress Kiki Layne (“Captive State”) will play the lead role of Tish in “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” for Annapurna Pictures.

Layne reportedly bowled over Jenkins by her reading, beating out more than 300 women who auditioned for the role following an intense search earlier this summer.

Jenkins is writing and directing this adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel about Tish, a newly engaged Harlem woman who races against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence while carrying their unborn child.

Stephan James (“Shots Fired”) is already set to play her fiance in the film which is expected to start shooting in October.
