Kevin Costner is in negotiations to star in what would be his first series regular role, serving as the leading man in “The Practice” and “Boston Legal” creator David E. Kelley’s new legal drama “The Trial” for Amazon Studios.
Should a deal be made, Amazon would skip their usual user-voted pilot process and take the project straight to series, the first time Amazon has given such an order. Kelley penned the pilot and will executive produce with Costner, while David Semel is rumored to direct the pilot.
Costner would play Billy McBride, a once respectable lawyer who was ousted from the high-profile firm he co-founded. No an alcoholic surviving on the occasional case, he is reinvigorated when a recently fired young lawyer brings him a wrongful death case that pits Billy against the head of his former firm.
“The Trial” would join Amazon’s growing stable of original series including “Transparent,” “Bosch” and “Mozart In the Jungle”.
