After holding onto the crown for some time, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy’ is about to have its title of biggest U.S. domestic earner of 2014 taken away by a certain figurehead of the rebellion.
As of the end of this weekend, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” sits at a domestic total of $323.9 million, just a few million shy of ‘Guardians’ which scored a grand total of $333 million. ‘Mockingjay’ has earned between $15-19 million a week these past three weeks, and so is expected to top ‘Guardians’ by next weekend.
‘Guardians’ still easily beats out ‘Mockingjay’ worldwide with $772.6 million vs $695.5 million so far, however both are far behind “Transformers: Age of Extinction” which managed a global haul of $1.087 billion, much of it coming from China.
All are being chased by the more recent opener “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” which is continuing to power ahead, especially in global markets, with a $678.6 million global total so far.
