Karl Urban has been confirmed to play the titular role of enforcer “Judge Dredd” in the upcoming film reboot of the franchise reports Empire Online.
Urban had been rumoured for the role last month, but producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich finally confirmed the news at Movie Con in the UK over the weekend.
They also talked briefly about their plans for the tone – “Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real.”
Pete Travis directs the project which will “not [be] based on any one comic” and much of the crew from “District 9” will work in the same capacities on this. Shooting kicks off in Johannesburg, South Africa later this year.
