Karen Gillan Talks “Guardians” Girlfight

It’s ever so briefly glimpsed in the trailer, but one of the big sequences many are keen to see in James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is a full on alien girl fight. The adaptation of the Marvel comic will see a one-on-one battle between Nebula (Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan) and Gamora (Avatar’s Zoe Saldana).

Gillan has been in Austin for the SXSW Film Festival and says the big scene is a pivotal one and tells MTV that she required a lot more training than Saldana did:

“Yeah, there’s a big girlie fight sequence, but it’s not that girlie. They made sure there weren’t any nice pirouettes or anything like that.

She [Zoe] is really experienced in the physical stuff, she was a ballerina. She’s really amazing at all of that stuff. She barely required any rehearsal, she was like, ‘I can do this.’ I required two months of rehearsals every day that I wasn’t shooting, because I looked like spaghetti when I started.

This is the integral one for my character, because it’s not just a physical battle. Their relationship goes very deep, and there’s a huge history between them. So there’s a lot more to it than just the physical.”

Asked about the tone of the trailer, the ramping up of the humor and camp in particular, Gillian says she always had total faith in the project:

“I knew it was in great hands. I just think it’s a new direction for Marvel, it’s really, really funny. It’s not taking itself seriously at all. It’s tongue in cheek. And just to see people be excited about that new tone is cool.”
