Sony Pictures is officially moving forward with plans to combine both its “21 Jump Street” and “Men in Black” franchises into one crossover action comedy feature.
James Bobin (“The Muppets”) is in early talks to direct the film which is aiming to begin production in June, though has not received an official greenlight at yet.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will return to reprise their roles as Jenko and Schmidt, but Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will NOT be reprising their roles of Agent Jay and Agent Kay.
Instead, the studio will use this film to relaunch the franchise with younger, fresher faces. Bobin will replace Phil Lord and Chris Miller who are unable to direct due to their commitment to the “Han Solo” film at Disney Pictures. They, and Neil Moritz, remain onboard as producers.
Talk of a crossover between the franchises was revealed over a year ago in the wake of the Sony hack scandal, with Rodney Rothman at the time set to pen the script. Rothman now has delivered that script and the studio is pleased with it.
