Angelina Jolie is in talks to star in Ridley Scott’s “Gucci”, a look at the turbulent times in the 70’s and 80’s of the family-owned fashion label for 20th Century Fox reports Variety.
The story follows Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, who emerged as the unlikely winner of a bloody power struggle to run the family business. The in-fighting and dilution of the brand’s prestige brought the once almighty fashion label to the edge of bankruptcy in the early 90’s.
Maurizio was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995 on the eve of a fashion show that would prove to be the start of brand’s revival thanks to newly installed creative director Tom Ford who turned the company around into a multi-billion dollar powerhouse.
Jolie would play Patrizia Reggiano, Maurizio’s ex-wife who was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting the murder despite claims she was blackmailed into going along with it. Leonardo DiCaprio has been approached to play Maurizio but hasn’t signed as yet.
Charles Randolph penned the current draft but the screenplay is expected to be getting an overhaul shortly. Filming is aiming to kick off next year.
