Following a wave of reviews out of Toronto, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Todd Phillips’ “Joker” film has dropped from the mid-high 80% range to a still very good 76%.
The new reviews have more than doubled the count from 39 to 91 reviews tallied, but plenty of mainstream critics have yet to see the film which is bound to be divisive. Box-office projections however continue to rise with the film now tracking for an $82 million-$90 million projected opening.
Director Todd Phillips spoke with The New York Times about the film, saying his approach to this DC adaptation was that: “you can’t beat Marvel – it’s a giant behemoth. [So] let’s do something they can’t do.”
He also talked about how Phoenix channeled the role’s dark energy and had a hard time processing it at points: “In the middle of the scene, he’ll just walk away and walk out, and the poor other actor thinks it’s them and it was never them – it was always him, and he just wasn’t feeling it.”
“Joker” is slated to open in cinemas on October 4th.
