Todd Philips’ already much discussed “Joker” film pulled in a record $13.3 million in Thursday night previews in North America. The figure is well above the $10 million in previews earned a year ago by “Venom” which went on to an $80 million opening weekend haul.
It’s also the highest number a preview night has pulled in since “The Lion King” made $23 million in July. The R-rated “Joker” has been forecast for a debut in the $80-95 million range this weekend domestically. “Joker” also pulled in $5.4 million in international previews and early showings Wednesday in four markets.
The talk comes as Deadline reports that the NYPD is employing the use of undercover, plain-clothes police officers to help ensure the safety of the public at this weekend’s screenings in and around New York. This undercover presence is in addition to the normally-dressed police that will be stationed at cinemas as well.
