Over the weekend came two interesting rumors on Reddit, both of which regarded the future of the DCEU.
One was that Warner Bros. Pictures was planning to release four “Batman” films in 2019 to celebrate the character’s 80th anniversary. DC Films co-head Jon Berg sent out a tweet today shooting down the report as a joke – “Hey @geoffjohns why didn’t you tell me we were releasing 4 Batman movies in 2019? Can we increase that to 10?”.
The same source later indicated that Warners was pulling Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam character from the “Shazam” film with that project being effectively scrapped. Instead he would be used as the villain of the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel along with getting his own “Black Adam” film.
It wouldn’t be unexpected. Henry Cavill teased over Christmas that Superman will clash with Black Adam at some point, and the characters have fought in the comics. But is that the case on film? Speaking this week during “The Fate of the Furious” press junket, Johnson confirmed to MTV that as far as he’s concerned the “Shazam” and “Black Adam” separate films are still on:
“We’ve had great discussions with Geoff Johns over at DC. This is a really fun, cool time for DC right now because they’re world-building. We’re seeing that with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. We have a few surprises down the line. So what we decided to do was to create a scenario where Black Adam has his stand-alone movie, and Captain Marvel, Shazam, has his stand-alone movie. We’re building our world that way, and then we can come together at some point… We have a surprise for Black Adam coming up. I can’t tell you what it is, but it is gonna be… it’s gonna be f–king awesome.”
That doesn’t necessarily rule out the “Man of Steel 2” rumor. Either way all of those films from “Black Adam” to “Shazam” to “Man of Steel 2” remain very much in the development stage and won’t be coming to the screen anytime soon.
