The other week came the announcement of Universal’s ‘Dark Universe’ initiative, the years in the works plan that kicks off with next week’s “The Mummy” and will include standalone films for a number of classic monsters.
Johnny Depp is already a lock for The Invisible Man, while Javier Bardem is set to play Frankenstein’s monster. Not yet set though are two other key roles – The Wolf Man and the Bride of Frankenstein.
Dwayne Johnson and Angelina Jolie have long been rumored for the respective parts, and in a new feature for THR the trade asserts that both remain the top picks for the roles, however, no deals have yet been struck.
This is all provided that Alex Kurtzman’s “The Mummy” and Bill Condon’s “Bride of Frankenstein” do well enough at the box-office to justify additional monster movie reboots.
There’s also a new wrinkle. The trade also reports that Warner Bros. Pictures is mulling legal action over the use of the “Dark Universe” title as it is developing its “Justice League Dark” project and tie-in comics all branded with a ‘Dark Universe’ banner.
