Johnny Depp will play war photographer W. Eugene Smith in the independent drama “Minamata” for HanWay Films.
The story will follow Smith, a WW2 hero years later had become a recluse. He then scored a commission from Life Magazine editor Ralph Graves to journey back to Japan to expose a big story: the devastating annihilation of a coastal community through mercury poisoning.
Andrew Levitas will direct the film based on the book by Aileen Mioko Smith and W. Eugene Smith. David K. Kessler adapted the script. Sam Sarkar, Bill Johnson and Andrew Levitas will produce and shooting will take place in Japan and Serbia starting in January.
