John Woo’s “1949” Has Been Cancelled

John Woo and Terence Chang’s Lion Rock Productions have abandoned plans to shoot the epic drama “1949” due to a dispute over the script rights with Ya-shih Films.

According to Screen Daily, Chang confirmed the news and has let go of the major cast members attached including Korean star Seong Hye-gyo and Taiwanese idol Chang Chen.

Chang also implied that it’s unlikely that Woo will pick up the project again even if the dispute is settled. Ya-shih is now preparing the project to be made into a TV drama in Taiwan.

Wang Hui-ling (“Lust, Caution”) penned the script which was set against the back-drop of the Second World War and the final years of China’s civil war prior to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

The film was intended to be Woo’s next project after wrapping up work on the two-part Chinese-language epic “Red Cliff”. At present, Woo does not have any plans for future projects.
