John Amos is set to return as Cleo McDowell, owner of fast food chain McDowell’s, in the “Coming to America” sequel at Paramount Pictures.
Amos joins fellow returnees from the original 1988 comedy including Eddie Murphy. Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, and Paul Bates. The group are joined by Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, and KiKi Layne who are taking on new characters.
Craig Brewer helms the film in which Prince Akeem, who is set to become King of Zamunda, discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle (Fowler). Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America.
Amos’ Cleo was the father of Akeem’s love interest, Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) in the first film. Headley’s potential involvement is unknown at this time.
Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Kenya Barris. The movie opens December 18th 2020.
