Even before it began production, Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was the subject of much speculation regarding cameo appearances from existing “Star Wars” characters.
That only heightened with the first trailer release which confirmed the return of Mon Mothma with British actress Genevieve O’Reilly reprising the role she played in a small cameo ten years ago in a cut scene from “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”. That trailer also fueled speculation as to the appearance of Darth Vader, something that voice actor James Earl Jones and then later Lucasfilm confirmed.
Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy has also shot down some rumored cameos in recent weeks. Speaking at the Star Wars Celebration expo, she shot down talk that Alden Ehrenreich would be making a small appearance as a young Han Solo, and that Hayden Christensen could be reprising his role of Anakin Skywalker in his Darth Vader form.
Today comes a new name to the list, and this one confirmed by the man himself. Speaking on The Talk (via The Playlist), actor Jimmy Smits revealed he would appear in the film and said: “Can you say the word cameo? Can you say the words small part?”. A recent behind-the-scenes featurette suggested his appearance, but this confirms it.
Smits played Leia’s adopted father Senator Bail Organa in two of the three prequels and, much like O’Reilly with whom he shared that scene, will essentially be playing the role again here.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens on December 16th.
