Gong Li is set to play the villain and Jet Li is in final talks to play the Emperor of China in Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 1998 animated feature “Mulan”.
In the film, the Emperor (Jet Li) orders the mobilization of troops via the conscription of one male from each household. Hua Mulan (Liu Yifei) disguises herself as a man in order to spare her elderly father from having to join the military.
Gong Li’s villain won’t be Hun leader Shan Yu like the original, instead she’s playing a powerful witch. Chinese-Vietnamese actress Xana Tang is also onboard as Mulan’s sister.
Niki Caro is directing the film which also stars Donnie Yen as Mulan’s mentor. Filming begins in August in China and New Zealand.
