Though a report a few hours beforehand indicated that Joel Edgerton had emerged as writer/director Tony Gilroy’s top choice, Jeremy Renner has now been officially offered the lead role in “The Bourne Legacy” for Universal Pictures reports Variety.
Story details are under wraps, though this character will NOT be Jason Bourne but another super assassin who went through the same program that Matt Damon’s character went through. This will allow for Matt Damon to return in the future if he so chooses.
Gilroy met with Renner, Edgerton, Garret Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Luke Evans for the role but it now seems the decision has been made. Frank Marshall, Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith are producing.
The downside with this choice is that Renner is now playing a government secret agent in not one but three separate franchise films set to come out in the space of a year – he’s being groomed to replace Tom Cruise as the face of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise in the upcoming fourth film, he’s playing Hawkeye in “The Avengers” and other Marvel films, and now this.
If he gets ubiquitous enough, will we soon see “S.W.A.T.” and “The Hurt Locker” sequels too?
