Jason Todd Is NOT Joker In “Suicide Squad”

One of the stranger rumors regarding the upcoming David Ayer “Suicide Squad” film, and indeed the DC cinematic universe as a whole, is that Jared Leto’s The Joker sports a quite different origin story to anything that has come before.

In the comics, one of the most famous Joker storylines is the famed ‘A Death in the Family’ in which Joker beats Jason Todd, the second Robin the Boy Wonder, to near death and then kills him in an explosion. Todd famously came back years later as the villain the Red Hood.

With the appearance of a Joker-slain Robin’s costume in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” it was indicated the events of ‘A Death in the Family’ happened before the continuity of the films and “Suicide Squad” might show us the murder in a flashback. One rumor though suggested a wild possibility – that Jason Todd wasn’t killed by The Joker – he IS The Joker.

Giving an interview with WSVN-TV at Comic-Con, Ayer emphatically shot down that rumor – “That The Joker is Jason Todd…it ain’t the case. He’s not.” Ayer gave the response when he was asked what was the most ridiculous rumor he’d heard regarding the film. He also spoke about the tattoos that Leto’s Joker sports:

“The tattoos tell a very specific story. And eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.”

The “Suicide Squad” film is slated to open in cinemas on August 5th.
