Jason Clarke (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Terminator Genisys”) has been cast as Jerry West, the Los Angeles Lakers All-Star player turned head coach, then scout then general manager, for the HBO drama pilot “Showtime”.
The one-hour series is based on Jeff Pearlman’s non-fiction book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s” focuses on the professional and personal lives of the Los Angeles Lakers in the eighties, with West in the GM position at that time.
In the series West is portrayed as a “cantankerous tortured genius of basketball” could build a Lakers dynasty but is also his own worst enemy.
Max Borenstein is writing and executive producing the pilot with production kicking off in September. Adam McKay (“The Big Short,” “Vice”) will direct the pilot and executive produce. Jim Hecht, Kevin Messick and Jason Shuman will also executive produce.
