In the wake of the negative “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad” critical reaction, the DC Universe is lightening up with “Justice League” and “The Flash” both expected to take on a much more humorous tone, while “Wonder Woman” will be more of a period adventure tale.
James Wan’s “Aquaman” film is following the latter’s template it seems with the director telling ET Online that the new film will be a ocean-going adventure tale with a tone inspired by some of the biggest films of the 1980s:
“I kind of don’t want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”
Wan also spoke about the Atlanteans role in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League,” saying Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Amber Heard as Queen Mera will only offer a brief taste of what the King of Atlantis’ standalone film will be like:
“I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, [are] going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be,” said Wan. “And that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.”
The “Aquaman” film is targeting a July 2018 release.
