Though filming has just completed, it’s only now been finally revealed that newcomer James Howson has scored the lead role of Heathcliff in Andrea Arnold’s upcoming film adaptation of Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights” reports The Daily Mail
The 20-something, Leeds-born Howson is believed to be the first black actor to star in the role in any screen adaptation of the work. In fact some academics believe Heathcliff was not meant to be white in the book where he’s described as a “dark-skinned gypsy in aspect”. Howson stars opposite “Skins” star Kaya Scodelario as the doomed Catherine.
Arnold’s approach is to return to the novel’s roots of doomed teenage lovers, thus they cast unknowns rather than the thirty something big name stars who’ve appeared in previous adaptations including Laurence Olivier, Ralph Fiennes, Timothy Dalton and most recently Tom Hardy.
Arnold also kept the £5 million film under tight security with much of the filming shot under strict secrecy conditions. Howson himself has no social networking sites.
