The first trailer for James Gunn’s Marvel comic adaptation “Guardians of the Galaxy” hit yesterday and people are still talking about it – some loving the wild and very different style, others just not clicking with the camp or the stylistic choices.
In a Total Film piece which gives a lengthy breakdown of the trailer, Gunn revealed a few more bits of information about the movie, where the production stands now, and explained some of the characters we’ll see.
Gunn says that most of Bradley Cooper’s dialogue as Rocket Raccoon has been recorded already. Cooper was hired “because he’s able to do both comedy and drama.” That line-up shot with the five characters at the end required 15 people to work on Rocket and 15 people to work on the tree-being Groot.
While the shots of Groot in the trailer took a few weeks to create, the development of his look and movement “took the better part of a year.” While “all the Guardians start out the movie as bastards,” Gunn calls Groot an innocent who is “caught up in Rocket’s life”.Zoe Saldana’s Gamora make-up takes around four hours to put on, whereas Dave Bautista’s Drax and Karen Gillan’s Nebula took six hours or more. Saldana and Gillan’s characters are “the two most hardass characters in the movie.”
Gunn says Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” is used in the film, as are a lot of other old songs on Quill’s mix tape in his Sony Walkman. According to Gunn it’s one of the few things he has from Earth, it’s dear to him and serves as “an umbilical cord that connects him to Earth and the home and family he lost.”
The Guardians start out essentially as criminals – “a thief, two thugs, a murderer, and a maniac” who end up in prison together. The spaceship battle scenes we see are “Star-Lord and the gang facing off with a fleet of Ronan’s Necrocraft.”
Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker’s Yondu, and Glenn Close’s Nova Prime characters are all being saved for the full trailer in a couple of months. Meanwhile Marvel have posted twelve new hi-res photos from the film, mostly shots from the trailer, online. You can see those below.
