James Frain (“Gotham,” “The Tudors”) has joined the cast of the upcoming series “Star Trek: Discovery” in a key role – Sarek, famed father of Leonard Nimoy’s Mister Spock.
The late Mark Lenard played Sarek across multiple appearances throughout the franchise over the last five decades. Ben Cross last played the role in the 2009 reboot of the franchise’s film series.
Frain joins a cast that includes Sonequa Martin-Green as the show’s central character Lt. Commander Rainsford along with Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Mary Chieffo, Shazad Latif and Chris Obi.
“Star Trek: Discovery” will debut on CBS All Access in the United States and Netflix later this year. Production was targeting May, but CBS now tells EW that “we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show.”
With a recent production listing indicating that the show won’t be finished production until early September, a late Summer/early Fall debut is now looking more likely. “Star Trek: Discovery” begins production next week.
