One of the more unexpected appearances in February’s “Alita: Battle Angel” was that of Australian actor Jai Courtney. The “Terminator Salvation” and “Suicide Squad” star appeared on screen for a single shot cameo as motorball star Jashugan.
Courtney had read for a couple of different roles in the film and while the casting didn’t work out, Courtney confirmed he was later asked to do the cameo with the intent of it being a much larger role should a follow-up be warranted. He tells Business Insider this week:
“[Rodriguez said] There’s this role, it’s a little small on paper, but if this thing blows up, I’ll need someone who I can rely on when we revisit it. And I was like, ‘F–k man, of course!’ For Robert Rodriguez, I’m going to go down there and do it. I have no idea what the future holds with that. I just approached it totally with zero expectations. If I get the call again, then fantastic.”
Courtney isn’t the only one as Edward Norton also appears for a brief cameo in a role that is set up to serve as the obvious overarching villain in at least one if not several potential sequels.
However the chances of that are slim. The film grossed just over $400 million worldwide (only $85 million domestic), but with a production budget of $200 million – meaning it’s not in profit (to cover P&A spend and exhibitor cuts, films have to make 2.5-3x their production budget before they hit profit). Another issue? It was a Fox production and Fox’s new owners Disney seems not interested in letting Fox’s non-major franchises grow.
“Alita: Battle Angel” is expected to come to home video sometime in June.
