Sony Pictures has given the green light to the big-budget romantic sci-fi drama “Passengers” starring “Jurassic World” lead Chris Pratt and “The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence.
Budgeted at $120 million with production incentives, with Village Roadshow and LStar covering much of the budget, the original script is set on a spacecraft transporting thousands of colonists. A malfunction takes place in one of its sleep chambers, causing a single passenger to be awakened ninety years before anyone else.
Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he decides to wake up a second passenger, thus beginning a unique love story. The likes of Keanu Reeves, Reese Witherspoon and Rachel McAdams were previously attached to the project at different times.
Both Lawrence and Pratt will be getting tidy sums for the job – Pratt nabs $12M, Lawrence gets $20M against 30% of the film’s profits after it breaks even. Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”) will direct the story with production slated to begin next month.
