Following on from their box-office battle this year, it looks like Will Smith will be taking on the “Star Wars” franchise again in 2016 – this time more directly.
Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that it has pushed “Chicken Soup for the Soul” from its December 16th 2016 release date, replacing it with New Line’s David Frankel-directed “Collateral Beauty” which stars Smith, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Pena. The only other film opening that day? Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
In ‘Collateral,’ Smith plays a New York advertising executive who experiences a deep personal tragedy and retreats from life entirely, prompting his colleagues devise a drastic plan to help him recover.
Smith’s NFL sports drama “Concussion” opened this past Christmas, one week after the release of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in cinemas. It was a battle ‘Wars’ easily won – “Concussion” pulled in just $34.3 million domestically and less than $7 million internationally.
