Filmmaker David Ayer posted an image of DC supervillain Black Mask on his Twitter account on Monday without a comment.
The posting comes as the “Suicide Squad” director is currently developing the Harley Quinn spinoff “Gotham City Sirens” with screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet and executive producer/star Margot Robbie.
This naturally has set off speculation that Black Mask will serve as the main threat of the movie. Ayer has previously used Twitter to show off Jared Leto’s Joker for the first time.
In the comics, the character is the brutally sadistic crime boss Roman Sionis who wears a black skull mask carved from the ebony coffin of his dead wealthy father – a mask that is permanently burned onto his face following an act of arson. Black Mask leads the False Face Society, a gang of criminals who each have a distinctive mask of their own, and ultimately he is killed by Catwoman.
‘Sirens’ is expected to star Robbie reprising the role of Harley Quinn again alongside new versions of Poison Ivy and Catwoman.
Meanwhile “Suicide Squad 2” also remains in development and Mel Gibson, appearing on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday, tells ET Online he’s had conversations about where to take the story but isn’t set for anything yet:
“I don’t know. I just met some guys about story points. It’s not a done deal or anything but it’s just fun to shoot the bull you know? When it comes to a story. I love doing it. And if we can elevate any kind of concept, it’s good.”
Neither “Gotham City Sirens” or “Suicide Squad 2” have set potential release or production dates at this point.
