LionsGate is is set to reveal the first trailer for “Insurgent,” the upcoming sequel to “Divergent,” in front of copies of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” in November.
LionsGate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed the news during the company’s fiscal 2015 first-quarter earnings conference, saying: “With the first ‘Insurgent’ trailer slated to debut with the release of ‘Mockingjay’ in November, skyrocketing book sales, a stellar home entertainment launch and stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort generating ever-increasing online buzz, I think you can understand why we believe that the ‘Divergent’ series is becoming very special.”
Feltheimer and have enough hopes for the franchise that’s there’s talk of going beyond the currently planned four films. Veronica Roth penned a trilogy of books in the series with the last of the trio being adapted into a two part film.
Roth also recently published “Four: A Divergent Collection” a collection of five e-Book short stories that follow the perspective of Four (Theo James) in events mostly taking place before those in the first “Divergent”. Asked about the possibility of a fifth instalment in the series, which would hit no earlier than 2018 and would likely use material from these books, Feltheimer says “We hope so.”
The first “Divergent” was not “The Hunger Games” or “Twilight” juggernaut the studio hoped, but it did score decent reviews and a healthy $274.9 million in worldwide box office, most of which ($150M) was from within the United States.
