It now looks like ABC and IMAX are targeting a Labor Day holiday weekend debut for the big screen double-episode premiere of Marvel’s “The Inhumans” event series.
THR reports that the two episode event will debut in IMAX cinemas on September 4th in over 1000 locations in 74 different countries. The plan is for it to run for two weeks starting on Labor Day before it later screens on ABC with additional footage for fans.
The first two episodes are being shot entirely with IMAX cameras, action scenes in the other six episodes – many of which will be set on the Moon – will also use that technology. IMAX itself is reportedly paying for the first two episodes.
With early Fall being a generally quiet time for theatrical releases, the plan is to ‘event-ize’ the release and help the show stand out from the crowded Fall TV slate. ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood says: “We think this is a quadruple win — a win for Imax, a win for Marvel, a win for ABC Studios and a win for ABC to launch a show in an innovative way and get attention.”
ABC also says that the series will NOT replace the planned “Inhumans” movie from Marvel Studios.
