Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has teased that Marvel’s take on the Illuminati are going to arrive in the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War” which begins production next month.
Out doing press for “Doctor Strange,” Feige confirmed to CBM that Illuminati characters will come together in the film but would mention names beyond confirming that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is in the film. Both Strange and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) are key Illuminati members in the comics:
“What’s fun about the Illuminati is seeing certain characters interact with certain other characters. I don’t know about that particular storyline, but some of those characters we’ll be seeing together onscreen in the next Avengers… We’re taking it one step at a time. Benedict puts on the cloak once again early next year in Infinity War.”
First debuting in 2005, The Illuminati was a secret society comprised of Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Professor Xavier and Black Bolt. Marvel Studios doesn’t control the rights to most of these characters any more though so Doctor Strange and Iron Man coming together could be it.
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are directing “Avengers: Infinity Wa”r from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Speaking of ‘Strange,’ Cumberbatch’s co-star Tilda Swinton says she hopes to reprise her role of The Ancient One in future MCU films, telling The Playlist:
“I am constantly dropping hints to Kevin Feige that I finally think he’s beginning to realize I’m not joking about a prequel,” Swinton says. “I want a prequel of the setting up of Kamar-Taj with Mordo, The Ancient One and Wong. That’s what I want and I’m telling you here right now.”
You can check out some B-roll from the film below. “Doctor Strange” opens next Friday and “Avengers: Infinity War” is targeting a May 2018 release.
