Ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next week, IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Justin Kurzel’s “True History of the Kelly Gang” starring Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Charlie Hunnam, Essie Davis and Thomasin McKenzie.
The fictionalized retelling of the life and crimes of the 19th century Australian outlaw Ned Kelly stars George MacKay in the title role. Shaun Grant (“Snowtown”) adapted the screenplay from Peter Carey’s Man Booker prize-winning novel which explores the younger years of Ned’s life to the time leading up to his death at the age of 25.
IFC will release “True History of the Kelly Gang” theatrically in 2020. IFC previously released Kurzel’s crime drama “The Snowtown Murders” and since then have worked on a pair of Michael Fassbender-led films with “Assassin’s Creed” and “Macbeth”.
