IFC Films has picked up the rights to “Charlie Says,” the new film about the infamous Manson murders which stars former “Doctor Who” and “The Crown” star Matt Smith as infamous cult leader Charles Manson.
The drama will focus on the three women (Hannah Murray, Odessa Young and Marianne Rendon) who were sentenced to death in Manson’s (Smith) murder case. The death penalty was ultimately lifted, altering their sentence into life imprisonment.
Merritt Wever plays Karlene Faith, a young graduate student who was sent to teach them and witnesses their transformations as they face the reality of their horrific crimes. The story is based on Ed Sanders’ 1971 book “The Family” and Karlene Faith’s “The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten”.
“American Psycho” director Mary Harron and writer Guinevere Turner return in the same capacities in the project which also stars Suki Waterhouse, Carla Gugino, Kaylie Carter, Chace Crawford, Sosie Bacon and Annabeth Gish.
