Idris Elba Talks His “Star Trek” Villain

Beloved British actor Idris Elba (“Luther,” “Pacific Rim”) is the villain in next Summer’s “Star Trek Beyond,” but frankly that’s about all that’s known about his role in the secretive Justin Lin-directed project.

In a new interview with MTV whilst out promoting Netflix’s upcoming “Beasts of No Nation” feature, the actor spoke a little about his antagonist role:

“Simon [Pegg] and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character. You’ve never seen me play a character like this.

I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains. He’s a guy who wants to end the world, there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there;s a slightly different twist to that.

It’s quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the ‘classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone.”

At this point it’s not clear what race Elba’s character is playing, but the actor follows in the footsteps of the likes of Eric Bana and Benedict Cumberbatch who served as the villains in the two previous rebooted ‘Trek’ franchise films.

“Star Trek Beyond” opens July 22nd 2016.
