Idris Elba has emerged as the front-runner to play gunslinger Roland Deschain in the upcoming film and TV adaptations of Stephen King’s fantasy novel series “The Dark Tower” at Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital.
The “Luther” and “Thor” star would face off against Matthew McConaughey who is in talks to play the villainous Man In Black in the first film which Nikolaj Arcel (“A Royal Affair”) is directing.
Arcel, who also penned the Swedish language adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, has been working with fellow Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen on a rewrite of Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner’s script.
Recent discussions narrowed down the role to either Elba or Javier Bardem, the latter having circled a previous version. The choice is not just a fresh one but also gives the project immediate critical and genre fan credibility.
Sony will distribute what is planned to be the first in a series of movies which will also score a complementary TV series developed by MRC. Goldsman, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Erica Huggins will produce.
