Idris Elba is a busy man in this back half of the year. He just had “The Dark Tower” in cinemas, has “The Mountain Between Us” and “Thor: Ragnarok” coming out imminently, and will be seen in “Molly’s Game” towards year’s end.
In a surprising admission to People this week though, the British actor revealed he could have starred in one of the year’s biggest box-office performers: “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.
Elba spoke with magazine editor-in-chief Jess Cagle about a number of his roles and his experiences in musical theater in his early days. He then said: “I honestly love musicals. I auditioned for Beauty and the Beast. I really did, for Gaston. I called and said, ‘Listen, I want in!’ So somewhere they have a tape of me singing.”
He clarified that he is indeed talking about the live-action film and was then asked if he holds a grudge against actor Luke Evans who ultimately got the part: “No, only a little bit. No! I love you Luke, you know that.”
Elba does confirm though that Disney has a tape of him singing as Gaston in his audition somewhere in their vaults.
